Eating disorders can have a huge impact on the lives of the people around the sufferer, which is why support, counselling, individual and family therapy is very important to help with some of the feelings and emotions that arise.
These can include;
- Self blame
- Depression
- Shame
- Sense of loss
- Confusion and hopelessness
- Isolation
- Anxiety

Do’s and Don’ts
Our simple list of what you should do and what you shouldn’t do, may help you cope with the difficult situation you and your loved ones face.
DO:
- Learn as much as you can about eating disorders
- Get them and yourselves help
- Be honest about your concerns
- Be caring but firm
- Try to make yourself available
- Be honest about your own fears, struggles and frustrations
- Express love and support
- Be patient – recovery can be a very long process
- Realise that whilst your loved one may need support but they have to want to recover for themselves
DON’T:
- Place shame, blame or guilt
- Let your fear of upsetting them stop you from speaking out about how you feel – communication is key
- Be convinced by lies or excuses
- Gossip about anything they share with you
- Make promises or rules that you cannot keep
- Give simple solutions to the complex problem
- Ignore or avoid the problem
- Forget to take care of yourself
